…Spreading the gospel of Christ

WORD MEDITATION: 11/07/2020

Bible Reading: Psalms 1,2 & 3; Acts 17:1-17

“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” Acts 17:11 (KJV).

Most believers in the body of Christ only listen to preachings but hardly go back on their own to search out what they have heard. This lack of search of the scriptures is the cause of so many Christians not being deeply rooted in their believe. When asked questions on issues they only repeat the words of their pastors without even citing the scriptures backing up what they have said.

True believe only come from your searching of the scripture after you have been taught or preached to. Acts 17:12a says “Therefore many of them believed” after they have searched the scriptures and confirmed what Paul said. Without this search, there won’t be a true basis for your believe. Without this foundation you cannot rightly divide the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15). What lessons can we learn from the Bereans in learning to search the scriptures?

The Bereans were humble, open minded and teachable. We need humility and open-mindedness to study the scriptures. They were more noble (than the Thessalonicans) and received the word with all readiness of mind. They received same teachings from Paul like the Thessalonicans, but they were humble enough to accept corrections and teachings.

The Bereans search the scriptures daily. Jesus said, “… man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” Matthew 4:4 (KJV). Just as food is important to our physical bodies, so also, the word of God is to our spirit. It is food to our spirit. Those who take in the word of God tend to be open minded, approachable and humble.

Lastly, like the Bereans, we must search the scriptures to prove all things. Paul said “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good” 1 Thessalonians 5:21 (KJV). Don’t just accept every teaching you listen to. You must prove them by searching the scriptures. Remember, there are wolves in sheep clothing with the aim of deceiving and taking many out of the faith.
