Bible Reading: Jeremiah 50; Hebrews 8.
“Behold the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt: which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord” – Hebrews 8:8-9 (KJV)
Oxford dictionary defines covenant as “a formal legal agreement or contract”. Covenant always takes place between two people or two different groups. This is put in place to prevent the compromise that may attempt to creep into what has been agreed to hold or do together. God promises to make covenant with all his people both with Israel and Judah.
Interestingly, this covenant was accomplished as a result of the death and his resurrection. We have the scriptural evidence to this claim “under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a young cow could cleanse people’s bodies from ritual defilement. Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our hearts from deeds that lead to death so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of His eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God a perfect sacrifice for our sins. This is why He is the one who mediates the new covenant between God and people, so all who are invited can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of sins they had committed under the first covenant” -Hebrews 9:13-15 (NLT)
The question is have you taken the advantage of the new covenant Christ has made for you or you are still reveling in the old covenant which cannot take you anywhere? The terms of the new covenant are clearly stated by the Lord: He will put His laws in your mind, He will write them in your hearts, He will be your God, You will in turn be His people, He will cause many people to know Him, He will be merciful to your unrighteousness, He will not remember your sins any more. (Hebrews 8:10-12) All these are what you shall gain when you enter into covenant relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
Prayer: God of new covenant, I enter into relationship with Your Son Jesus Christ today.
