…Spreading the gospel of Christ

Bible Reading: Genesis 29,30; Matthew 9:1-19

“And while he yet spake with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep: for she kept them.” – Genesis 29:9 (KJV)

There is something about serving or assisting in your father’s business that opens you up to your glorious destiny. God commanded in Exodus 20:12 (KJV), “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.” Also, Ephesians 6:2-3 says “Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.” Honouring our parents includes, among others, appreciating them, accepting their authority, treating them with respect, and serving them.

Children today are so much in a hurry to leave home. Even the little time they spent with their parents before leaving, nothing of note could be recalled by the parents that these children did while at home. The behaviour is even worse when out of home because the foundation was not good enough. For it to be well with these children, honouring and serving their parents is vital. It helps set them on the path to a smooth life.

Examples abound of saints who got divine favour, promotion and even encountered destiny by simply serving their parents. Elisha was working in his father’s farm when Elijah found him and dropped the mantle on him. Saul was looking for his father’s ass when God sent for him. David was taking care of his father’s sheep in the fields when God sent for him. And now Rachel. How did they end up?

Elisha got double portion of the anointing on Elijah. Saul became the first King of Israel. David, too, ended up as a King through whom the Messiah came. Rachel became the wife of the blessed man, Isaac. Isaac so loved her he spent fourteen years working for her father just to get married to her (Genesis 29:27-28).

Action plan: Share some of these examples with your children or kids around you and encourage them to take more responsibilities while still under their parents.
