Bible Reading: 2 Chro. 11; Col.3:1-13.
“Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;” – Colossians 3:9 (KJV)
Lying is saying something with the intent of creating a false belief or impression. It’s an attempt to get someone to believe something that is not true. It is one of the commonest sins but that does not mitigate its consequence. It is a command from God that we should not lie. Colossians 3:9 (KJV): “Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;” The severity of this sin is seen in the consequence as stated in Revelation 21:8 (KJV): “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
The various instruments of communication that help you to conceal your location at any point in time aids people in telling lies. That’s why you will see men in one location that will be saying on their mobile phones, they are in a different location to deceive the other party. Why lie at all? Well people tend to lie out of fear, because of pride, to remain in control, to avoid disappointing others and to cover other lies among several others.
The question that has been posed by many is whether it is possible to live without telling lies. The answer is Yes. And the process is simple. Firstly, make up your mind that you do not want to tell lies again. Then, take a position on what you will do if you happen to tell a lie. It could be that you will go back to the person you lied to and correct yourself. Thirdly, seek the help of the Holy Spirit by praying to God to help you stop all forms of lies.
What happens when you follow those steps is that you become more conscious of the various times you are about to tell a lie. The Holy Spirit will remind you and you will be left to take a decision. If you are true to yourself such that anytime you tell lies, you ensure a recant, your soul will begin to reason with you to stop lying. The core issue is whether you want to go to hell because of lies? Surely no true believer wants to. Then the next action is to commit to a life of honesty and follow the three steps stated above.
Action plan: Commit to live a life of honesty and pray to God for the Holy Spirit to help you on this.
