“Mortify therefore your members which are on earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry” – Col.3:5(KJV)
To mortify is to kill. It is to put to death. We are to put to death those element of the flesh as mentioned above because they have the power to cause us to lose our salvation which was purchased with a very costly price. Let us examine the five things we are admonished to kill:-
Fornication: This relate to all manner of unlawful sexual relationship including adultery.
Uncleanness: Whatever is opposite of purity; including sodomy, homosexuality, lesbianism, pederasty, bestiality and all other forms of sexual perversion.
Inordinate affection: Unnatural, unrestrained and excessive passion and lust
Evil concupiscence: Evil, wicked and depraved desire, lust, passion or appetite.
Covetousness: This is referred to here as idolatry, and it is classified among sexual sin. It describes the erotomania that is common among women who extravagantly idolizes or having a delusion of a romantic relationship with another person mostly celebrities.
These are all flesh related sins that attract God’s wrath. It is our responsibility as Christians to put these acts to death in our life, through the renewing of our mind by allowing the word of God to sink into our spirit. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life”– Proverbs 4:23. In Psalm 119:133 the Psalmist said “Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me”. My dear reader it is very important that we saturate our heart with the word of God. We must also mind the company we keep and the friends we associate with. We must live a consecrated life. We must pursue holiness without which no eyes shall see God.
Prayer: O’LORD, I plead your grace to live a life that is dead to sin.
