Bible Reading: 2 Chro. 12; Col.3:14-25.
“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” – Colossians 3:17 (KJV)
The words of our mouth are powerful and they can either build or destroy. This is why the bible says in Proverbs 18:21 (KJV): “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” But the tongue is often used to speak guile and things that cannot add value. And the bible clearly says that a man that cannot control his tongue is not a true believer. James 1:26 (KJV): “If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.”
To further buttress this, the Lord Jesus gives us more reasons why we must of necessity watch the type of words that come out of our mouth. Matthew 12:35-37 (KJV): “A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” Meanwhile the word of God tells us that one cannot tame the tongue (James 3:8) because it is not the origin of the words that we speak.
So how then do we ensure that our words align with the word of God because Apostle Paul says in Colossians 3:17 (KJV): “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”
To address the issue of the type of words we speak, let us look at the source of the words as stated by the Lord Jesus in Matthew 12:34 (KJV): “O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” This means we need to train our heart since it is the source of our words. This we can do by studying, memorizing and meditating on the word of God and filling our hearts with them ( Joshua 1:8). Also we should fellowship with other brethren (1 John 1:7) and show love to both God and our neighbours (Luke 10:27). Since we cannot obtain righteousness by our own deeds, we need to pray regularly asking God to fill our heart with love. A heart filled with love will always look for the good of others including soothing words!
Prayer Point: Father, fill my heart with your love and help me to live a life pleasing to you at all times in Jesus name.
