Bible Reading: 2 Samuel 1, 2; Luke 14:1-17.
“How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!” – 2 Samuel 1:27 (KJVS)
Currently, it is generally believed that nine countries have nuclear weapons. They are US, UK, Russia, France, China, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea. These nuclear weapons have not been officially detonated since 1945 when they were used in World War II. There were arguments that they were used in 2019 in Syria but this was not conclusive. It is also believed that these nuclear bombs in the world have been reduced from about 70,000 in 1986 to about 14,000 by the end of 2019!
It is however interesting that the war heads could not be used to counter COVID 19. Just one virus and the whole world is on compulsory holiday! This shows the superiority of the Almighty God that no individual or country can contend with! The words of David on the occasion of the death of Saul and Jonathan as stated in the scripture is pertinent: 2 Samuel 1:27 (KJVS), “How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!” Just like the king of Israel, Saul and his loving son, Jonathan, fell at war with the Philistines, the atomic weapons all over the world have become useless in a raging war against the whole world. This is the limit of the knowledge of man. The weapons were fashioned to destroy seen enemies but cannot stop the unseen one. The whole world was caught unprepared for this war and its arsenals have come to nothing.
The same applies to our lives. Academic knowledge or Professional expertise cannot take anyone to heaven. Only the relationship you have with God can secure you a place in eternity. What we struggle to achieve in the world such as education, professional positions, political posts are means to an end and not end in themselves as they will be useless when the rapture comes! The only thing that will be relevant at that point is whether your name is written in the book of life. No wonder Matthew 6:33 (KJVS) says, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” This is why it is important to always ask yourself whether your ways are right with God. And you can be prepared if you live your life in line with the commandments of the Lord so that whenever death comes, you will be ready to meet your creator. Are you ready?
Prayer point: Father, in the name of Jesus, let me make it to the end and not fall by the way side!
