Bible Reading: Leviticus 23 & 24, MK 1:1-22
“He shall order the lamps upon the pure candlestick before the LORD continually” – Leviticus 24:4 (KJV).
The light in the tabernacle was expected to burn continually. Aaron was given the responsibility to order the light on the candlestick to burn continually. The light must not go off. As the light burns, the priests and Levites are able to see clearly to offer their service in the tabernacle. The lamp shined on the table of shew bread and gives light to the tabernacle. In the same way, the Holy Spirit indwells the New Testament believer to give light to the believer.
The word of God is a lamb unto the feet of the believer and a light unto his path. There is no occasion for stumbling in the light. The Christian is expected to let his light shine before others so people will come to the Lord through their light. As Christians, we have a responsibility to protect or preserve our light as well as the responsibility to let our light shine in the darkness of the world.
The light is lit at new birth. The presence of the Holy Spirit in the believer is the coming of light. The believer, however, is to ensure that the light is not concealed or put off. It is possible for light to be shielded such that the effect of the light is not felt. When a believer conceals his identity or compromises his faith, he denies the world around him the light, but when a Christian shines for others to see, he reveals Jesus. “Ye are the light of the world; a city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your father which is in heaven” Matthew 5:14-16 (KJV). We are not to trim our light like the five foolish virgins or to run out of oil. The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar, it shall never go out – Leviticus 6:13 (KJV).
PRAYER: Dear Lord, help me to keep the light shinning and the fire burning continually.
