Bible reading in one year: Ps. 107, 108 & 109; 1 Cor 4
“My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me.” – 1 Cor 4:4 (NIV)”.
The word “conscience” literally means “with knowledge.” The conscience is an inner God-given awareness that confirms to our mind and personality the rightness or wrongness of our actions. While we must strive to keep a clean and clear conscience in our relation to God, we must also realize that the conscience is not the final authority. In Paul’s case, he was truly innocent of any wrong motivation towards the Corinthian Church; yet he still recognized that his final considerations were only human and that his own conscience could be mistaken.
We also must realize that just because we feel confident about our actions or motivations, we should never be so puffed up with pride that we assume that we are always correct in our personal views and actions. That is because if we are not careful, humble and submitted to the standard of God’s Word, our consciences can become insensitive or corrupted. If that happens, we may not even be aware of our sin and misguided perceptions.
