Bible Reading: Isaiah 62, 63 & 64; 1 Timothy 1
“As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine, neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, … and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned” – 1Timothy 1:2-5 (KJV)
The ultimate goal of all instruction from God’s Word is not Bible knowledge in itself but an inward spiritual transformation that radically change one’s moral character. If genuine, this change will express itself in love and purity of heart. This in turn, leads to clear conscience and a sincere faith that is reflected in one’s everyday life and behaviour.
Concerning this truth, two important facts must be kept in mind:
- The Biblical concept of teaching and learning is not primarily to share, receive or gain knowledge or to prepare oneself academically. It is to produce holiness (i.e., moral purity, personal integrity, spiritual wholeness, separation from evil, and dedication to God) and a righteous lifestyle (i.e., one that reflects a right relationship with God and does what is right by His standard). Knowing more of God’s Word means little if a person is not becoming like Christ and conforming to God’s ways and purposes (2Tim1:13).
- A teacher of God’s Word must be someone whose life is an example of the truth, faith, and standards conveyed in the Bible. In other words, those who instruct people in the Word must live what they teach; otherwise, they are hypocrites.
