TOPIC: GOD HATES IDOLATRY
Bible Reading: 1 Chronicles 5-6; John 8:21-36
Memory verse: “And they transgressed against the God of their fathers, and went a whoring after the gods of the people of the land, whom God destroyed before them” 1 Chronicles 5:25 (KJV).
God created man to worship Him and gives His people a commandment in Exodus 20:3-4 (KJV), “Thou shalt have no other gods before me. [4] Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in the heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.” His stance is very clear on worship. We have no other choice. When man worships any other god apart from the creator of the universe it becomes idolatry. God hates idols and idolatry.
Man, however, struggles to keep up with God’s requirement of true worship and whenever worship is not in place man feels empty. In trying to fill that void man goes after other gods in the form of creations made of woods and other materials beneath the status of man himself, made in the image of God. Fulfillment in life will only come from worship of the Only true God who made the heavens and the earth.
The children of the half tribe of Manasseh forgot who they were and went after other gods. The bible says, “And they transgressed against the God of their fathers, and went a whoring after the gods of the people of the land, whom God destroyed before them” 1 Chronicles 5:25 (KJV). They followed after foreign gods that God earlier warned His people against, “The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be ensnared therein: for it is an abomination to the LORD thy GOD” Deuteronomy 7:25 (KJV).
Idolatry is anything more important to you than your creator; it is nothing that takes control of heart and you think about it always more than you do God. God has always been harsh on idolaters. As for the Reubenites, the Gadgets, and the half tribe of Manasseh God caused the king of Assyria to carry them out of their land to another land (1 Chronicles 5:26).
Worship the creator of the heavens and earth alone. Let Him be the major occupant of your heart and every other thing will be in place.
