Bible Reading: Numbers 8-10; Mark 5:1-20
“And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.” – Mark 5:7 KJV
The demonstration of Jesus power and authority is seen even in the appeals of the demons in the demon-possessed Man. Even the demons know they must acknowledge the Lord Jesus Christ. The demons acknowledge Christ as the Son of God, and they know that He has the power of final judgment or torment. They know that the lake of fire awaits them. They don’t deny that. Their only concern is the timing of the matter and their end.
This man serves as an illustration of how far the sinful nature and the kingdom of darkness can consume and possess a person. This man was dead in his sins. Spiritually speaking, he was walking dead. He was consumed by his sin and by a legion of demons. His depravity is on full display for all to see. He cannot save himself. Others cannot rescue Him. But the Power and Authority of Jesus Christ over the demons did rescue him. For such reasons Jesus came to the earth, to exercise authority over the kingdom of darkness. “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.” 1 John 3:8b (KJV)
This is an important testimony to demonstrate the sovereignty of Christ over the forces of evil. Even the demons know that Christ has the power of torment. He has the power and the keys to overcome death and evil. “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” Revelation 1:18 (KJV)
Christ who rules in us, and rules all things for us, is more powerful than all the forces arrayed against us. And that’s an important thing to learn when you face the horrible difficulties of living in a fallen world. God is not out of control; but all powerful and can rule and overrule for our good.
As believers in the Lord Jesus and children of the most High God, the same power and authority has been given to us to overcome all the evils of the devil (Luke 10:19).
Prayer: Father endue me with the power at work in Christ to overcome every evil around my path.
