Bible Reading: 1 Chronicles 19, 20, 21; John 8:1-29
“And yet again there was war at Gath where there was a man of great stature, whose fingers and toes were four and twenty, six on each hand, six on each foot: and he also was the son of a giant. But when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea, David’s brother, slew him.” – 1 Chronicles 20:6-7 (KJV)
There is this ever green hymn, which is drawing our attention to the fact that we must never let off our guard as Christians.
Christian seek not yet repose,
Hear thy gracious Saviour say
Thou art in the midst of foes
Watch and pray
Principalities and powers
Mustering their unseen array,
Wait for thy unguarded hours
Watch and pray
The above hymn gave the summary of the battle we are into. The above passage opens us also to the fact that we must not go to sleep whenever we win a battle. In fact it is the preparation for another, possibly a bigger one, as we have seen above. The phrase suggests that, there was war before which, of course, was won by the Israelites. While that battle was on-going, another one was brewing underneath.
The description of the Bible of the challenger helps us to see that, giants are always available to prevent us from entering into our inheritance, especially our heavenly home which is our ultimate inheritance. We must therefore be on our guard every time and not allow the weapons to slip off our hands. The weapons are prayers, the word of God, holy life etc. Do not trade it off with anything for any reason.
Have you won a battle against flesh, sinful habits etc.? Seek not yet repose, warm up for another battle, bearing in mind that Christ the royal Master is always ready to lead against the foes that may assail us.
Prayer: Father, bestow on me grace of watchfulness in Jesus Christ name.
