…Spreading the gospel of Christ

Bible Reading: Esther 9 & 10; Acts 7:1-20

“For Mordecai the Jew was next to king Ahasuerus, and great among the Jews, and accepted of the multitude of his brethren, seeking the wealth of his people, and speaking peace to all his seed” Esther 10:3 (KJV)

True greatness is measured by character. What made Mordecai great among the Jews was not his position of authority, but his acceptance by multitude of his brethren. This acceptance was engineered by his character and attitude towards his people. His selfless pursuit for the wellbeing of his people made him accepted by his people and earned him greatness. A detail study of the book of Esther will reveal Mordecai’s personality. He was a bold person who holds his believe very strong, was a firm and determined person, he was a devout man with absolute trust in God and had an unshakeable believe in the power of God to save. The scripture bears him record that he sought the wealth of his people. Despite his exalted position Mordecai did not forget his origin. He identified with his people and sought diligently after their wellbeing. He was truly a leader who had the burden of his people at heart.

The above qualities cannot be said of our modern day politicians. They solicit for people’s vote during election and they greet people with exceptional politeness and friendliness. However, immediately they win, their voters become people of low esteem and nonentities. To see them become impossible, they no longer answer their phone. They become so exalted in their position considering their voters as riffraff. They embezzle public funds and loot the treasury and become rich. They used their ill-gotten wealth to maltreat the same people who voted them into power. They live with impunity and are above the law. These should not be the attitude of believers in Christ.

Mordecai character should be our Christian signpost of a true leadership worthy of emulation. Jesus came from heaven to give us an example of true leadership. In John 17 Jesus poured out His heart of Love praying for the preservation of the believers. He loved His own unto death. This is the Christ example of leadership. Some of the leaders we have today in the church are so exalted in their position to notice the terrible economic deficiency and depravation of most of their followers. In pursuit for worldly pleasure they have become self-centred. The bible did not record anywhere that Jesus ate anywhere before feeding the five thousand. They were with Him, and so if they were hungry couldn’t himself have also been hungry? But His focus was the people. He had compassion for the multitude that have been with Him. This is selflessness which we must practice as true followers of Jesus.

My dear reader, please note that for the purpose of reconciling you back to God, our leader Jesus Christ paid the price of sin, for you to gain entrance into God’s presence. By His death He lifted us to sonship in God. He made us heirs and joint heirs with Himself. By not accepting Christ you are denying yourself of sonship to God. Come today and be drafted into the family of God, identity freely given by redemption.

Prayer: Father grant me your grace to emulate the true Leadership in Christ Jesus.
