Bible Reading: Psalm 37, 38, 39; Acts 26.
Memory Verse: “Delight thyself also in the Lord ; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” Psalm 37:4 (KJV).
Delight means please greatly or great satisfaction. Delight yourself in the Lord therefore means pleasing God so greatly that you derive great satisfaction from it. How do you achieve that? It’s by making a conscious effort to please Him. However, you cannot please some one you don’t know. So the starting point is to know him. Jeremiah 9:24 KJV says “But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord.”
To know God, you must find out about him. And a sure way of finding about him is the bible. Study the word of God so that you can know who he is, what he likes, what he does not like and how to please him. Knowing him also entails spending time with him. When you spend so much time with someone, you get to know his voice and his other features such that whenever the person speaks anywhere, you will be able to identify him. That’s why most of us can pick out our parents, spouses or children voices out of several people. It’s due to time spent with them.
Spending time with God will involve thanking him, praising him and then praying to him. (Psalm 100:4). To delight God, you will do what he likes and that means living a life of obedience to his words. Such obedience involves preaching the gospel, caring for the needy, loving the human kind irrespective of class or race among others.
There is also a corollary to delighting yourself in God. Psalm 37:4 (KJV) says “Delight thyself also in the Lord ; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” Once you delight yourself in God, you will find out that your interests and desires will align with God’s interests and so those things begin to get accomplished easily. This is why it’s important to seek first the kingdom of God and its righteousness!
Prayer point: Father, I desire to delight in You. Please give me the grace to do this continually in Jesus Christ’s name.
