Bible Reading: Psalm 93:1 – 5
‘The Lord reigneth, he is clothed with majesty’ – Psalm. 93:1
There is a popular saying that familiarity breeds contempt. How true! This is so, especially with regards to our relationship with the Lord. Sometimes we forget how great our God is. We sometimes get so accustomed to God and his Word that we are no longer inspired by them. Psalm 93 is a reminder of the incomparable greatness of our King. We also, like the Psalmist, ought to get regularly into the habit of reminding ourselves of how great our God is.
Three areas inform the praises of the Psalmist and these may well inform our praises too. First, the Psalmist considers the splendor of the Lord as he sits enthroned and ‘clothed with majesty’. But unlike human kingdoms that are only transitory, God’s throne is forever. He is ‘from all everlasting’ (vs. 2). Secondly, the Psalmist praises God for his greatness over nature. He is mightier than the roaring of many waters and the mighty waves of the sea (vs. 3 and 4). Finally the Psalmist praises the Lord for his holiness as displayed in his law (vs. 5).
God deserves our praises. The Psalmist praises God not because he feels like God has been particularly good to him (although he definitely had), but because of whom the Lord is. Praising God is not about us, but about him. We praise him not because of us but because of who He is! So, whether things are going our way or not, we should praise Him. He deserves our praise. His greatness does not depend on us. Hallelujah!
Prayer: Sing a song of praise to our God for who He is to you.
