Bible Reading: Psalm 120:1 – 7
“Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue” – Psalm 120:2(KJV)
To dwell with a lying tongue and deceitful person is a most terrible nightmare. A person you cannot trust, whose statement you doubt is not at all worth living with. There are people who by their nature are terribly possessed by lying spirit to the extent that when they greet you good morning you are sure it is not morning when you check your time. God hates a lying tongue and a false witness that speaketh lies (Proverbs 6: 16-19). Lying is a product of a reprobate mind, an unregenerated soul. A deceitful tongue goes a step higher than a lying tongue. A deceitful heart is a heart that mischievously connive lie and deception with the intention to deceive people. A deceitful man is a deceiver that should be avoided; his ways are full of cunning works and deception.
Like the Psalmist, we need to daily pray that God should deliver us from people with this evil attribute. They don’t wear mask to show they are deceitful. They are cunny and slimy persons who can disguise as responsible persons and creep into your abode if you are not alert. It becomes more difficult when such persons creeps into the body of Christ to exploit the open spirit of trust in Christian brotherhood. Many have been casualties of this evil act and more will still fall victim.
The spirit of lie should not be found in a true child of God and among God’s people. See what the scriptures says in Ephesians 4:25(KJV): “Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.” Deception and lie can erode trust among brethren, it can create division and rancour hence it must be resisted by a true child of God. To avoid unnecessary embellishment cease to speak much. In quietness shall your strength be. It is better to be quiet than to speak and commit yourself to lie. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, so you must hold on to the truth always to enjoy the ways and the life of God here on earth. Liars and rumour mongers shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Our word should be our bond. God cannot lie, we must therefore possess the attribute of our father. Lie is an abomination unto God. “Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight” – Proverbs 12:22(KJV).
Having Jesus in our life is having the truth dwell in us. So we must not allow any element of lie to come near us. We should avoid lying tongues and deceitful soul. We must give distance to persons of such characteristics.
Prayer: Father, give me grace to pick a liar and deceiver from a distance and avoid him like a plague.
