Bible Reading: Psalm 132, 133 & 134; 1 Corinthians 11:18-34
“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity” Psalm 133:1 (KJV).
God has always desired His people to dwell in unity by being together in one mind and spirit. God is honoured when multitude come to Him in unity. Unity of purpose in God produces great result in the kingdom. Because of this, Satan does all he can to disturb the unity among God’s people.
One way the devil causes division among the church is to misinterprete the clear doctrines handed over to the churches by the apostles. Some of these misinterpretations are largely due to the lack of knowledge of who believers should be after new birth. Paul had to write long letters to the Corinthian church straightening out issues that are capable of causing contentions, and ultimately, dis-unity in the church.
God’s purpose for the church is to be together in fellowship with the Father and the Son. Jesus made this clear when He prayed for His disciples in John 17:11 (KJV), “And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.”
Israel left Egypt in unity and God came into their midst such that the sea gave way for them (Psalm 114:3). The disciples were praying together in unity of purpose when the Holy Ghost came in Acts 2. The apostles did wonders in the early church because of unity of purpose. The church of God spread so quickly because of unity among the believers. No wonder Satan is attacking the unity in the church today.
When you notice any dis-unity building up, call on the name of Jesus to open the eyes of your brethren and ask for grace to recognise the hand of the devil in times like this. Let’s continue to pray for unity among believers as this is the only way through which God can come into our midst.
