…Spreading the gospel of Christ

WORD MEDITATION: 31/08/2024

Topic: Are you a true follower of Christ?

Bible Reading: Psalm 145-147; 1 Corinthians 11:1-15.

Memory Verse: “Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 11:1 (KJV)

Follower here means imitator. Are you an imitator of Christ. To be one, you should follow Him in all areas. The Bible tells us the way of the Lord Jesus Christ and any true follower must follow in those steps.

The first is that you must be born again by accepting Him as your Lord and Saviour (John 3:3). Having accepted Him, you need to know more about Him and the best way to do that is by studying His word and obeying the commandments stated in it. Ecclesiastes 12:13 (KJV) says, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” The next way to follow Christ is by sanctification. This means being set apart for God. This means surrendering all to Christ and completely yielding to the leading of the Holy Spirit. At this point, you will be focused on fellowshipping with Christ to know Him more and to please Him at all times. You will thus hate everything sinful and love righteousness. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 (KJV) says , “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

The next stage of imitating Christ is to be baptized by the Holy Spirit. Remember that after water baptism, Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit. Matthew 3:16-17 (KJV) states, “And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: [17] And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

You should also be filled with the Holy Spirit so that you will receive the enablement to do the service committed to your hands. Remember also that the Apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit according to the account in Acts 2:4. So being a disciple of Christ, you also can disciple others asking them to follow your example as Paul said to the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians 11:1 (KJV), “Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.”

Going by the above, if you are a true follower of Christ, then you can tell others to be your followers because being so will make them imitators of Christ.

Prayer point:
Father, please give me the grace to be a true follower of Christ in Jesus Christ name.
