“Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre,
bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. And they found the
stone rolled away from the sepulchre.“ Luke 24:1-2(KJV)
Jesus was crucified on a Friday, died in the afternoon which was close to the beginning of the Sabbath. You see, from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday; it was considered to be the Sabbath and NO work could be done! Jesus had died in the afternoon and his friends did not have enough time to properly prepare Him for burial, so they had to hastily wrap His body and put Him in the tomb. These women were on their way to the tomb to prepare Jesus’ body because they had NOT been able to do it on the day He died. They wanted to do this as a matter of respect. He was well respected and this was the right thing to do.
They wanted to pay tribute to Him as best as they could and this would have been the only way they could have done that…as there was no formal funeral. They simply took His body and placed it in a tomb.
It is obvious that, these women NEVER expected to find the risen Lord… they were going to anoint the body of a dead friend and teacher.
As they approached the sepulchre, the thought they had was: Who will roll away the stone. This stone had been a concern and a stumbling block to their final respect. By the way they were not expecting Jesus to rise from the dead. From Matthew’s account, an angel rolled away the stone and sat on it.
Are you faced and resisted by mountain size problems? God promised to overturn them by their roots. You will come out of your graves. Nothing will hold you down.
The ministry of angels can still be engaged today in trying and tough times. They are there to do for us great tasks we could never do for ourselves. God promised that they would bear us up on their wings.
Prayer: Father, help me to find help by the ministry of your angels.
