Bible Reading: Psalm 90-92; Romans 11:1-21.
Memory Verse: “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Psalm 90:12 (KJV)
The days of any human being on earth is limited. Everyone shall die one day. This brings up two critical issues that should be addressed. What will you achieve on earth before you die and secondly, what happens to you after death. Numbering your day therefore tells you that you do not have eternity in your hands and you need to work hard to achieve your goal. This is similar to someone who gains admission to the university. He knows the duration of his course and knows that he needs to study hard to pass his exams in order to get the certificate he came for. He knows that if he fails to read and fails the exams, it can delay his graduation or even lead to his rustication from the university.
If the university did not specify the duration for the course, students will not take the studies and even the exams seriously thinking they still have time. This is the situation with most people on earth, they are quite relaxed and are not doing what they should be working on. They take life for granted. This was the situation with the rich man who had a very good harvest and decided that he would build a special warehouse and store his harvest and thereafter retire and begin to eat and merry everyday but that day, God said he was a fool and his life would be taken from him same day because he did not number his days and give glory to God (Luke 12:16-20).
A true child of God should therefore constantly remind himself that he is a pilgrim in this world and his actions/inactions will determine how he will spend eternity. One should live life as if tomorrow will never come. This is why everyday, a true child of God should continuously seek ways of pleasing the Lord by walking in the Spirit.
When you know you have a limited time, you are more likely to focus more on your goals and do everything needed to prepare for hereafter. But, unfortunately, many people tend to forget their pilgrimage status on earth and, therefore, please their flesh continually hoping to turn to God when the end is near! But who knows when the end will come? This is why the Psalmist prays to God in Psalm 90:12 (KJV), “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”
Prayer point: Father, teach us to number our days so that we may apply our hearts to wisdom in Jesus name.
