TOPIC: YOKED WITH THE HOLY GHOST
Bible Reading: 2 Chronicles 21-24; John 16:1-15
“For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” — Matthew 11:30 (KJV)
In Christ Jesus, we have been given rest from every form of condemnation, anxiety, fear, and striving. Jesus declared, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” Matthew 11:28 (KJV). As believers, we do not strive to obtain God’s acceptance or favor; we live and operate from a position of rest that Christ has already secured for us. In the following verse, Jesus teaches us how to live from that place of rest. He says, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me.” Matthew 11:29 (KJV). The Christian life is both a walk with God and a work with God. We are called to learn His ways, follow His leading, and depend on His strength rather than our own.
In biblical times, it was common practice to yoke a younger ox together with an older and stronger one. The experienced ox carried the greater responsibility of the work while the younger ox learned by following its lead. Although it appeared that both oxen were doing equal work, the strength and direction primarily came from the mature ox. This picture beautifully illustrates our relationship with God. The unforced rhythms of grace are learned as we walk in fellowship with Him. Jesus demonstrated this principle throughout His earthly ministry. He taught His disciples not merely through words but by showing them how to trust the Father in every situation.
A clear example is found when the temple tax was due. Jesus instructed Peter to go to the sea, catch a fish, and find the money needed to pay the tax (Matthew 17:27). From a natural perspective, Peter caught the fish and paid the tax. However, the miracle occurred because Jesus directed him. Peter succeeded because he was yoked to Jesus. He did not know how the provision would come, but he trusted the One who did.
As Jesus prepared to return to the Father, His disciples became troubled at the thought of being without Him. Yet Jesus reassured them, saying, “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you” John 14:18 (KJV). He promised that they would not be left without help. The key to victorious Christian living is learning to be yoked with the Holy Spirit in every area of life. Instead of relying solely on your own wisdom, strength, or experience, depend upon His guidance. Life becomes burdensome when we attempt to carry it alone, but grace flows when we follow His leading.
Today, choose to walk closely with the Holy Spirit. Listen for His direction, trust His wisdom, and obey His promptings. As you do, you will discover the ease, strength, and peace that come from being yoked with Him.
Prayer: Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Help me to walk closely with Him and depend upon His guidance in every area of my life.
