TOPIC: KEEPING WISE COMPANY
Bible Reading: Isaiah 41–42; Colossians 1
“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.” — Proverbs 13:20 (KJV
Your company and associations play a major role in the fulfilment of God’s plans and purposes for your life. You eventually become like those you consistently walk with. Sometimes, people say that God does not need anyone to accomplish what He wants to do in your life. That may not be entirely true. God often uses people as channels through which He brings His purposes to pass in our lives. Therefore, it is important to be intentional about the people with whom you associate and the influences you allow into your life. Proverbs 13:20 teaches us that those who walk with wise people will themselves become wise.
Mary had an amazing encounter when the angel Gabriel visited her and announced that she would conceive and bring forth the Son of God (Luke 1:26–38). After this encounter, the angel directed her to Elizabeth, her relative, who had also conceived miraculously in her old age. The angel said, “And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren” Luke 1:36 (KJV). Mary needed to see another manifestation of God’s power so that her faith could be strengthened and her understanding expanded. God can use the right associations to give you new pictures of possibilities and help you see beyond the limitations of your present experience. One of the great benefits of being brought into the company of the wise is the mind-shift that takes place as you learn from those who have walked with God and experienced His faithfulness.
The Scriptures also show that Saul’s association changed after his encounter with Samuel. Samuel told him, “Then thou shalt go on forward from thence… and three men going up to God to Bethel shall meet thee” 1 Samuel 10:3 (KJV). This was not a coincidence. God was arranging new relationships around Saul as he stepped into a new dimension of purpose. The anointing of God can bring you into divine associations that expose you to wisdom, knowledge, possibilities, and people who will help you fulfil His purpose. When God brings you into the company of the wise, do not take the relationship for granted. Learn the lessons, receive the wisdom, and allow God to enlarge your vision through the people He has placed around you. Choose your company wisely, because the people you walk with can influence the person you become.
Prayer: Father, Give me wisdom to recognize and maintain godly associations. Lead me into the company of the wise in Jesus Name.
