Bible Reading: Psalm 90:1 – 17
“…….we spend our years as a tale that is told” Psalm 90:9b(KJV).
I always feel astonished whenever I read the inscription on tombstones or the biography of a deceased. Whenever the time spent (years) of the deceased is written, it is usually done in brackets and more confounding is that the year of birth and the year of death are merely separated with a dash, For example Mr. XYZ (1920 – 1995). This illustrates that all the time (years) spent by the deceased is represented with a dash.
Friends, man exists in the confines of eternity. The day he was born, the bracket of his life was also opened and the day he breathes his last, the bracket will be closed. All his activities irrespective of the duration (long, half-long, short, etc.) will be represented with a dash. This affirms the words of the Psalmist that ‘we spend our years as a tale that is told…’ If life is a tale then the content of that tale should not just be about its duration but its essence. It is not the years in one’s life that counts but the life in one’s years. ‘Teach us to number our days…our hearts to wisdom’ – this is the recommended solution to redeeming the time. We must learn to make the most of our time. Do not keep on procrastinating! Spend your years loving your spouse, loving your family, loving your neighbor, and above all, loving God. That is what a heart that has learned wisdom does. Remember, before the bracket of your life is closed, let your life not be merely about its duration but about its donation.
May the good Lord teach our hearts to learn wisdom and may we learn how to make the most of our days here on earth in Jesus name.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to fill the duration of my life with essential godly donations.
