TOPIC: THE NEED FOR PERSISTENT PRAYER
Bible Reading: Isaiah 45–47; Colossians 3
“For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries.” — 1 Corinthians 16:9 (KJV)
It takes more than good intentions to fulfil God’s purpose on earth. The fact that you desire to do something good for others does not mean you will be free from opposition. In Acts 19:23–41, we see how Apostle Paul encountered fierce resistance in Ephesus because of the Gospel. Demetrius, a silversmith whose business was threatened by the spread of the Gospel, stirred up opposition against Paul and his companions. As a believer, you must understand that fulfilling a kingdom assignment requires more than human ability, intelligence, or good intentions; it requires divine power. If your assignment advances God’s purpose, you must be prepared to face opposition and depend on God’s power to overcome it.
Our opening Scripture reveals an important truth: a great and effectual door can be open while many adversaries are present. Opposition does not necessarily mean you are outside God’s will; sometimes, it accompanies the very opportunities God has placed before you. However, God has given you the privilege of prayer through which you can draw upon His strength and stand firm against opposition. James 5:16 (KJV) declares, “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much”. Your responsibility is to persist in prayer, trusting God to strengthen you, direct your steps, and help you overcome the obstacles confronting your assignment. Depending solely on your strength, intelligence, and abilities can leave you frustrated and discouraged, but Isaiah 40:31 (KJV) promises, “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint”. As you wait upon the Lord in prayer, your strength is renewed, your perspective is strengthened, and you are empowered to continue despite opposition.
Daniel served in a foreign land under a heathen king and remained effective despite the schemes of those who sought his downfall. One of his secrets was his consistent life of prayer “Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.” Daniel 6:10 (KJV). Likewise, do not make light of your time in prayer, because it is a vital part of the preparation and empowerment for your God-given assignment. In God’s presence, your heart becomes more sensitive to His leading, His Word strengthens your faith, and you receive wisdom for the steps ahead. Do not allow fear of your adversaries to stop you from embracing the opportunities God has placed before you. Persist in prayer, remain steadfast in faith, and move forward with confidence in God. The door is open, and although adversaries may be present, you can depend on the Lord to strengthen and guide you as you fulfil His purpose.
Prayer: Father, thank You for the opportunities You have opened before me and for the privilege of coming into Your presence in prayer. Strengthen me to remain persistent in prayer in Jesus Name.
