TOPIC: TAKING OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH PRAYER
Bible Reading: Ezra 3-5; John 20
“For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries.” — 1 Corinthians 16:9 (KJV)
When God called you to do something good, it does not mean it will be free from opposition. Kingdom assignments often attract resistance because the enemy seeks to hinder the advancement of God’s purpose. It takes more than good intentions to fulfill a divine mandate; it requires the power of God working through a life of prayer.
In Acts 19, the Apostle Paul encountered fierce opposition in the city of Ephesus as he preached the Gospel. Demetrius, influenced by the enemy, stirred up a great uproar against him in an attempt to stop the spread of God’s Word. Yet, despite the resistance, the Gospel continued to prevail because God’s power was at work. Whether you are a pastor, missionary, businessperson, educator, or serving in any sphere of influence, if your work advances God’s kingdom and blesses people, you should expect opposition. The enemy often raises obstacles and influences people to resist God’s purposes. Therefore, every kingdom assignment requires spiritual power sustained through prayer.
Our text declares, “For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries.” While God opens doors of opportunity, adversaries may arise to oppose them. The good news is that Christ has given believers authority over every work of the enemy, and this authority is exercised effectively in the place of prayer. The Scripture says, “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” James 5:16 (KJV). Prayer releases divine power that breaks barriers, dismantles opposition, and clears the way for God’s purpose to be accomplished. It is in prayer that heaven’s resources are brought to bear upon earthly situations. Isaiah 40:31 reminds us, “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles…” Waiting upon the Lord is more than passive expectation; it is a deliberate act of drawing near to Him in fellowship and dependence. In the place of prayer, our strength is renewed, our vision is refreshed, and we receive grace to rise above every obstacle.
The prophet Daniel understood this principle well. Though he served in a foreign government and faced continual opposition, he remained steadfast because of his consistent prayer life. Even when threatened with death, he continued to seek God faithfully, and the Lord preserved and promoted him (Daniel 6:10).
Never underestimate the value of your time in prayer. It is there that strength is renewed, wisdom is imparted, and power is released for your assignment. Do not allow fear of unknown to keep you from walking through the doors God has opened before you. As you remain steadfast in prayer, every adversary will be subdued, and you will soar above every limitation by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Prayer: Father, strengthen me in the place of prayer and empower me to overcome every opposition to Your purpose for my life.
