TOPIC: THE POWER OF A SINGLE MIND
Bible Reading: Isaiah 62–64; 1 Thessalonians 5
“For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” — James 1:7–8 (KJV)
In Matthew 17, the disciples of Jesus struggled to cast a demon out of a boy, but Jesus came and delivered him. When the disciples privately asked why they had been unable to cast it out, Jesus pointed to their unbelief (Matthew 17:19–20). This account reminds us of the importance of faith and unwavering trust in God. Sometimes, we may know what God’s Word says and desire to act on it, yet we still struggle with doubt when we are confronted with difficult circumstances. The facts before us can appear so overwhelming that they influence our expectations and weaken our confidence in God’s promises. Therefore, we must learn to recognise thoughts that contradict God’s Word and deliberately renew our minds with the truth of Scripture. Faith is not pretending that challenges do not exist; it is choosing to trust God’s character and promises even when the circumstances are difficult.
It is one thing to agree mentally with a Scripture and another to allow its truth to shape our inner convictions and responses. Ephesians 4:23 instructs us to be “renewed in the spirit of your mind”. This renewal takes place as we continually hear, study, meditate on, and obey God’s Word. When our thoughts are divided between trust in God and fear of our circumstances, we can become unstable in our decisions and actions. For example, a person may believe that God is able to heal one illness but struggle to trust Him when faced with a more serious diagnosis. Yet we must not measure God’s power by the severity of a condition or the outcome of other people’s experiences. Neither should we assume that persistent illness or an unanswered prayer necessarily proves a lack of faith. Instead, we can bring our fears honestly before God, seek His wisdom and encouragement from other believers, and pursue appropriate medical care while continuing to trust Him.
James 1:5 (KJV) encourages us, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him”. God invites us to seek Him with sincere hearts, trusting His wisdom and guidance. This is why meditation on God’s Word is essential to our spiritual growth: it helps us examine our thoughts, deepen our understanding, and strengthen our confidence in Him. Make time to reflect on Scripture until its truth increasingly shapes how you think, speak, and respond to life’s challenges. When doubts arise, do not surrender to fear; turn to God’s Word, pray for wisdom, and stand firm in what He has revealed. A single-minded heart is not one that never experiences questions or struggles, but one that continually turns to God and chooses to trust Him. Let your mind be renewed by His Word, and walk in steadfast faith, in Jesus’ name.
Prayer: Father, thank You for Your Word, which guides me and strengthens my faith. Help me to recognise and overcome thoughts that contradict Your promises in Jesus Name.
