TOPIC: THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH
Bible Reading: Jeremiah 9–10; 1 Timothy 3
“But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.” — 1 John 2:20 (KJV)
We live in a world where things are not always what they appear to be, and many voices compete for our attention. However, as believers, we do not have to live in confusion because God has given us the Holy Spirit to teach, guide, and help us discern the truth. When the Apostle John wrote to the early Christians, they were being confronted with false teachings and people who sought to deceive them. He reminded them of the anointing they had received from the Holy One and their ability, through the Spirit, to recognise the truth. His words, “But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you” 1 John 2:27 (KJV), emphasise the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit in believers. The world today is full of teachers, opinions, and competing ideas, and it is easy to become overwhelmed by the many voices seeking our attention. Yet, we have the Spirit of truth within us, who helps us discern what agrees with God’s Word. We must learn to listen to Him, remain grounded in Scripture, and refuse to be carried away by teachings that contradict the truth of the Gospel.
When John explained that believers did not need anyone to teach them, he was not suggesting that Christian teaching or spiritual instruction was not necessary. Rather, he was warning them against deception and reminding them that the Holy Spirit would help them recognise falsehood. God has given teachers to equip His people and build them up in the faith “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; [12] For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11–12 (KJV). Therefore, we should receive sound biblical teaching while depending on the Holy Spirit to help us understand and discern the truth. The Spirit’s guidance is not a licence to accept every inner impression as God’s voice; whatever we hear or believe must be tested against Scripture. The Holy Spirit helps us apply God’s wisdom to our daily lives, including our relationships, family responsibilities, work, and important decisions. When faced with two seemingly good options, we can pray for wisdom, examine the principles of God’s Word, seek mature counsel, and trust the Spirit to guide us. As Isaiah 30:21 declares, “And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.” We should remain attentive to God’s leading while exercising patience and discernment.
Jesus promised His disciples in John 14:26 that the Holy Spirit would teach them all things and bring His words to their remembrance. What a wonderful assurance! The Holy Spirit is our divine Helper and Teacher, guiding us into truth and reminding us of what Christ has taught. Therefore, do not allow the noise of the world or the opinions of others to drown out the truth of God’s Word. Cultivate fellowship with the Holy Spirit through prayer, meditation on Scripture, and obedience to God’s instructions. When you hear a teaching or sense an inward prompting, examine it carefully in the light of Scripture and seek godly counsel when necessary. The Spirit of truth will never contradict the Word He inspired. As you grow in your relationship with Him, you will become better equipped to distinguish truth from error and make decisions that honour God. Listen to the Holy Spirit, remain rooted in the Word, and walk confidently in God’s wisdom, in Jesus’ name!
Prayer: Father, thank You for giving me the Holy Spirit to dwell in me and guide me. Help me to recognise His leading and discern truth from error in a world filled with competing voices in Jesus Name!
